The pill
So, a school nurse took a sexually active 14 year old to a doctor to get contraception/the pill. Of course her parents were furious and blamed the school for being irresponsible, etc.
However.
Can you imagine what would happen if the young girl had continued being sexually active without taking the pill? Eventually she would have gotten pregnant, and then her parents would be even more outraged. They’d probably blame the school for having poor sexual education. Can anyone else see the paradoxical nature of the situation? It’s pretty obvious the girls parents didn’t know about her active sex life and her teachers couldn’t force her to talk to her parents about it, although they must have encouraged her to do so.
And, really, it wasn’t the girls teachers that taught her to be sexually active before she hit 16 (The legal age for intercourse in Victoria), but you can bet that there’ll be some sort of discussion about the quality of sexual education in schools in relation to this incident.
I’m starting to feel a bit sorry for schools. It’s a damned if you do, damned if you don’t predicament.
