Sydney report

Posted on 4 December 08

Tired and happy, I arrive from Sydney!

Highlights

  1. Climbing the Sydney Harbour Bridge. I did it for the adrenaline rush but, well, the extreme safety measures taken made it a little less exciting. I know it sounds strange, but I would have preferred to climb the bridge knowing that I could die. Therein lies the thrill! However, it was wonderful despite this!
  2. The view from our apartment. Standing on the balcony you could see half of the Opera House.
  3. Monet and the Impressionists.
  4. Bonding with friends.
  5. Darling Harbour and Circular Quay. They are stunning when the weather permits.
  6. Beaches! Manly, Palm and Bondi.
  7. Walking… Around. Most of this was done during shopping, and it was nice to see things that I have never seen before. (I’ve been to Sydney twice before, but I was staying in different locations each time and they weren’t for holiday purposes, per se)
  8. The Sydney locals. 99.9% of them are lovely and always willing to help a girl in need of directions and whatnot. Except for one woman who had a problem with waiting in a queue.

Done!… Nearly.

So. I had my last exam this morning. Studio Arts. It went well!

I tried my best on all of my exams… But I know on some of them the marks won’t be too hot. But, as clichéd as this is, I’ll be satisfied with whatever I get. I tried my best. I don’t think there’s any way I could do better than that that didn’t involve NoDoz, nicotine and twenty four hour days, which I am not willing to be a part of. I hear scary and weird stories on the grapevine about fellow year twelves popping them like candy and getting addicted. Not sleeping for five days and still rushing about with red eyes, stuttering and ugly moods. So, no.

On the twenty sixth I am going to Sydney (!) for a week, but until then I still have other stuff to do. Application kits and interviews for places that want to see my art to see if I am good enough, if I measure up. Siiiiigh.

I’m very tired. But, I’m this close to getting a huge break, so I have to stick it out until then…!

King sized mattresses

Posted on 30 March 08

I went to an art exhibition that consisted entirely of life sized photographs of old and dirty king sized mattresses. The photographer didn’t do anything to them, he simply took photos of them. When you think about, there isn’t much effort involved.

However. It was pretty brilliant. Art is almost as much new/interesting ideas as it is execution. Who on Earth would think of taking life sized photos of filthy matresses? It was all very Duchamp-esque, a Readymade. Sometimes it irritates me that so little effort can be put into making art, but I only think like that because I try so hard to make all of my work perfect and I put in a lot of effort.

I’m looking for fine art courses, and I might be going to an expo about improving ones art folio- There’s a strange finality about doing these things.
